The Blessings of God: Physical or Spiritual?

The Misconception About the Blessing of Abraham

A few weeks ago I was visiting a friend. He was very excited about something he had read on the internet and wanted to show it to me. He said that he finally understood why things in his life were not going as well as it should and how God would improve his circumstances and quality of life through his faith. He then showed me an excerpt from a teaching he came across. It spoke about the blessing of Abraham and the Garden of Eden and how Christians can “unlock” these blessings through faith. Here follows a few key sentences from the teaching:

“That blessing (of Abraham) is nothing less than the divine empowerment to re-create the conditions of the Garden of Eden wherever we go!” and “That means if you’re born again, the Garden of Eden is inside you right now, and Jesus is saying to you much the same thing God said to Adam. He is saying, I bless you. Now take that blessing and release it by faith so it can manifest and re-create the conditions of the Garden of Eden in your life.”

Does this sound familiar? I have heard a lot of similar teachings on the blessing of Abraham, the prayer of Jabez (1 Chronicles 4:10) and the Garden of Eden from quite a few preachers. These teachings all follow the same theme: Jesus died so that we can have life abundant here on earth. Believers just have to stand on God’s promises and believe that God will give them their hearts desires. Believers have to “take back” what Satan stole from them by “releasing their faith”. This doctrine is in error and will ruin faith.

Let’s look again at the excerpt above. You will notice how this preacher’s focus is upon connecting the word, blessing, to the circumstances of life. This preacher is endorsing the popular false doctrine that God wants all Christians to achieve their dreams, to be rich, healthy, problem free and live a long life.

While it is true that God cares for, and provides for His children, this is not the blessing of Abraham. We are not arguing against the care of God for all the spiritual and physical needs of His children. We are taking a stand against the false doctrine which puts the blessings of Abraham out of the spiritual, and putting it into the natural (carnal).

The Things of the World are Vanity

What are the blessings of Abraham? What are the promises of God to those who love Him? What is life abundant? Is it earthly possessions? Is it money, relationships, health, long life, family, protection from enemies? Or did God have something more in mind when he promised that the blessing of Abraham will come upon the Gentiles? (Galatians 3:14)

Many Christians have been misled to believe that being blessed by God has to do with the aligning of circumstances and themes of life to fall in their favour. But do believers ever think about the fact that these themes and issues and dreams of the world are temporal? A house, money, social standing, healthy relationships etc? That when we die the “Garden of Eden” we have tried to create here on earth will not carry any weight with God?

Did you know that your soul was designed in the image of God and that, like Him, it is eternal and can only truly increase with eternal things? The riches of the world hold the promise of fulfilment and abundance, but it vexes the soul because of its vanity. (Ecclesiastes 1:2) It is empty and void of the substance of Christ, who is the only one who can truly complete the soul.

Listening to at all these tele-evangelists and preachers and reading books that endorse the doctrine of earthly blessing, it is not strange for believers to ask these questions: Why would a God, that is eternal, bless his children with the temporal and vain things of this dimension? Wouldn’t an eternal God bless us with the things of His kingdom, which is not earthly but spiritual, not temporal but eternal? Isn’t this why God sent Jesus Christ, to give us all things that pertain unto life (in the spirit) and godliness?

We were designed by God and we were designed for Him, we were designed to increase only by what He would provide for us through the covenant of Jesus Christ. Isn’t this life abundant: Knowing our Maker through the fruit of His Spirit and fellowshipping with Him around His table?

NEW BREED - In these end days, as God is exposing the lies of Satan and making known the true knowledge of His covenant, a new breed of Christian is arising. A new priesthood for spiritual warfare, new knowledge for covenant faith, and new stewardship that will lead the church through the transition prophesied by Hosea.
False Promises Breeds a False Hope and Expectation

Many pastors and teachers claim that all believers have the blessing of Abraham as well as the blessing of Jabez and that Jesus came to remove the curse of poverty so that Christians can take back what Satan stole from them. All these blessings are ours because we are Christians, but we have to first “lay claim to it” or “activate it” or “unlock it” by faith. It is clear to see that this doctrine puts Christians’ expectations in physical things.

What is the result of these doctrines of health wealth and increase in the world? We see that Christians’ hopes and expectations are being placed within the wrong promises. Their hope is in the resolving of problems, in living a life that orbits around their pleasure, of healing, increased finances and good relationships. They are looking forward to abundance in the flesh and not abundance in the Spirit. If your expectation is to receive from God the desires of your heart, then you have placed your hope in the wrong promise and you should not be surprised if God does not fulfil these expectations of yours.

“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Matthew 6:21)

Where is your treasure? Where are you placing your expectations? The world has become so focused on the fulfilling of their dreams and desires that they have lost the appetite for the spiritual things of God. Spiritual things such as: to know God, to love God, to serve Him in righteousness, to increase in His perspective and to bear His fruit in the inner man.

“Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” (Colossians 3:2)

The True Blessing of Abraham

Let’s talk a bit more about the blessing of Abraham.

Being children of Abraham through faith, it is true that we have received the same blessing, but the problem is that current church leaders do not understand the blessing of Abraham and are merely transferring their distorted perspective to believers. They are focusing on (Deuteronomy 28) when they should be looking at the following scriptures:

"And he (Abraham) believed in the Lord; and He (God) counted it to him for righteousness." (Genesis 15:6)

“That the blessing of Abraham might come on the gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.” (Galatians 3:14)

Here would be a perfect time for the apostle Paul to expound on the material blessing of (Deuteronomy 28) that is supposed to be ours through Abraham.  But the apostle does not speak of any material blessings, nor does he confirm the use of incantations (confession of scripture) to bring the blessings of Abraham down.

“For if Abraham were justified by works, he has whereof to glory; but not before God. But what says the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.” (Romans 4:2-3)

God promised Abraham righteousness by faith, without the works of any law. God promised to grant righteousness on the basis of grace and faith alone. That’s it. That’s the blessing. And it is a blessing worth so much more than any earthly treasure, because it grants us access to the mind of our Father. Through faith we know God and we are able to increase in fruit. This fruit and this renewed perspective is our blessing for it frees us from the keyhole perspective of our logic.

There is a lot more to learn about this blessing of Abraham and about the 4 Steps to conversion that Abraham followed and set as a pattern for all believers to follow. We also are partakers of this promise of righteousness based on faith when we follow the steps of our father Abraham and believe in Jesus Christ. To gain insight regarding these 4 Steps, follow the link of the E-book called: “The Seal of the Spirit” and learn more about the extraordinary promise of God to the seed of Abraham.

False Knowledge
FALSE KNOWLEDGE - Satan uses false knowledge to keep the heart of man in bondage to his kingdom. There are countless of false doctrines that have entered the church, crippling the faith of many believers. Learn how false knowledge is Satan’s means of deception and about the many counterfeit Christ’s that put believers on a false journey of faith.
God is Uprooting the False Doctrines of Satan

God is uprooting all of Satan’s false doctrines that have penetrated the church and destroyed the faith and hope of many Christians. God has now restored His holy, ordered knowledge to His church so that believers’ faith will meet His standard daily. Faith needs to be properly defined if we want to walk after the Spirit and not the flesh.

In addition to the blessing of Abraham, there are many promises and blessings that God has promised to those who keep the terms of the covenant of Christ. Some of these spiritual blessings are: that we will know our Father in heaven and fellowship with Him and that we will increase with the fruit of His kingdom. God has promised that all those who love Him will taste of things to come as the fullness of Christ brings healing and completion to the soul. The promises of God to His children need to be defined if we want to put our hope and trust in that which has substance.

A misplaced hope brings depression, but when Christians’ hopes are put within the true promises of the covenant of Christ then the soul experiences true completion and fulfilment. Visit and return to the purity of faith and the fullness of the eternal promises of the Lord.
