The Plumbline Gospel: The Deadly Sleeping Potion

Plumbline Gospel & Rip Van Winkle

By Teacher Maria vonAnderseck

We often hear it asked, What caused the church to fall asleep? And how can we wake up this Rip Van Winkle? At issue is the anger and frustration most Christians experience in not being able to mobilize believers to vote against what’s been seen as the rising tide of wickedness.

In the story of Rip Van Winkle, we see the affliction of the church. The man who slept away his life to escape responsibility has telling spiritual parallels to the church today. Let us look at the 4 stages towards Rip Van Winkle’s inebriated sleep (escapism) to understand what God is addressing in the church today:

1. Rip Van Winkle spent his day attempting to help others in his village
, while neglecting his own farm, house, and family. His inability to focus his attention on his true duties while seeking to officiate in the affairs of others speaks of the kind of idleness that has taken hold of the church. While focusing attention on changing the world and social policies, Christians have neglected the Lord’s house and their priesthood duties. Where is the fruit in the soul? And the spiritual growth and unity of faith amongst God’s people? Each believer still clings to independent stewardship, the altar of Christ lays in ruins, and believers don’t know what truth is.

2. Rip Van Winkle spends much time in the pub where the idle men of the village gather to gossip and “tell sleepy stories about nothing”. Spiritually, this speaks of the endless seminars and conferences where believers are fed a constant diet of the psychology of change, looking into the tea leaves of their lives and emotions to discern God’s voice.

3. Rip Van Winkle heads into the woods. Atypical of a person who is alive to themselves, but dead to God, Rip follows his passions. The woods offers shelter from his responsibilities and the wife who daily badgers him for his idle ways. Spiritually, this speaks of the wandering church.

The church headed into the woods so to speak when the voice of the conscience could not be silenced. It’s not that a believer meant for their faith to be idle. That was the result of joining their faith to unsanctified stewards who taught them wicked ways rather than the way of holiness and righteousness, leaving their souls empty of the virtue of Christ. Christians responded by leaving church. They headed into the wilderness to develop a new kind of Christianity—one without stewardship – just me and God.

4. Rip Van Winkle falls into a 20 year sleep after inebriating himself.
A fellowship was introduced to him in the wilderness that drew him into partaking of the drink they offered. After many rounds of drinking and toasting to himself, Rip succumbs to the intoxicating influence.

Spiritually speaking, the intoxicating drink symbolizes false knowledge. When apostles were not teaching the one true doctrine of Christ, believers filled their cups from the wells of false knowledge that were littered around the wilderness. Drinking to the full, the church slept for nearly 2,000 years.

So today, that drink is still being poured shared. Believers are being told that to say “NO” to every social ill means that you “KNOW” God. But this is not true. To know God is a different story altogether.

We are getting to the heart of the real problem and a good look at what real wickedness is, aren’t we? Now, let’s move in closer, to zoom in at the spiritual Rip Van Winkle syndrome taking place in the church. There are some things you need to know. If false knowledge is such a problem, how does it get its start?

The Plumbline Gospel: The Measure of the Flesh

We are now going to connect false knowledge to the plumbline gospel, a form of insanity far more common amongst Christians than one would think, where believers flesh out their faith, so to speak, using their own person (flesh/life) to measure God’s will, God’s love, and God’s purpose rather than use Jesus Christ as the true measure for faith.

Once the deadly potion of false knowledge is understood, you can then understand how the devil was able to wickedly put faith to sleep by subtly changing the way in which faith is measured. You must know, while it is true that we are the object of God’s love, we are not the “tool” of God’s love. Jesus Christ is the tool by which we are to measure truth to receive, experience, and walk in the love of God.

The True Plumbline

Has the enemy lulled you to sleep? Find out by reading the following scriptures from the book of Amos.

Amos 7:7-8
7 Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.

8 And the Lord said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them anymore.

What is a plumbline? According to the Free Dictionary, it is “a line regarded as directed exactly toward the earth's center of gravity.” In that the plumbline is in the hand of God, that should tell you that He is the plumbline. In other words, the divine standard by which we are to measure truth and the will of God.

God had intended for us to measure faith to Jesus Christ, not to ourselves. While a person might accept that in theory, in reality, what happens is that the precept and line of scripture is used in measure God’s will to the flesh. If you have found yourself asking, What is God’s purpose for my life? How can I use my signature gifts and skills for God? How can I be sure that God is involved with my life? What is God saying to me about my marriage, my relationships? How can I learn from my mistakes? then know that faith has become a product of the flesh, not the divine standard of Jesus Christ.

What usually follows these questions about the flesh is a spattering of scripture lined up just right to help the mind make connections to the failings of human nature, the yearnings of human need, and the desire for God to bridge these things apart from the due process God committed Himself to by sending Jesus Christ as the bridge and mediator of the new covenant.

Rather than follow the terms of the covenant, believers are being taught how to follow God by the precept and line of scripture. They were taught how to lay hold on the things of the Spirit by lining up scripture to address the flesh. This backward way of faith is described best in Apostle Eric vonAnderseck’s course “The Flesh” and his article “The Precept and Line Phenomena”. I’ve quoted a large section of that teaching below.

Is the Word of the Lord to You Precept and Line?

“Isaiah described those who would measure faith in God by precept and line rather than by the pattern of truth in Jesus Christ. Isaiah wrote, “But the word of the Lord was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken” (Is.10:13).

Who is the prophecy of Isaiah referring to? Who is “them”? They are the ones who profess that they love God, but lay claim to God by the precept and line of scripture, not true faith by covenant. Being led astray by this form of wickedness, they are not blessed of God, but fall backwards, they are broken, and snared by the devil, and taken captive for his will.

When precept (a scripture) is carnally applied to the areas of our lives, the flesh serves as the “plumbline” to measure God’s will, hence, the plumbline gospel. By the plumbline gospel, faith is made to serve the flesh.

A good example of how this redirection of faith takes place can be seen in how faith practitioners answer life’s problems, dilemmas, and heartaches by saying, “Go to the Bible, see what the scriptures say about your problem, and apply that to your life.” We can see the same M.O. (mode of operation) of the plumbline gospel to redirecting faith from Christ to self for resolution of a problem, rather than directing faith to abide in Christ through our restricted activity in the new covenant priesthood, wherein we serve God and not self.

The Bible is not about us or our issues, it’s about God and His covenant of faith through Jesus Christ. The Word of the Lord is not precept and line. The Word of the Lord is Jesus Christ (Jn.1:1). He is not paper and ink, He is not text, and He is not the precept of the scripture. He is the living Steward of His grace and truth.

When Jesus is obscured from the gospel, then it is understandable that all that a believer can see is the themes and issues of life, and therefore, he tries to lay claim to God’s promise of life in Christ by precept rather than covenant. When Christians try to measure their obedience to God by the precept of scripture, they fall victim to following another Jesus.

One of the most important things for Christians to learn today is that, the knowledge of the world cannot reproduce God’s likeness, which is why false knowledge is called “dead” knowledge. The knowledge of this world works with the appetite of man to increase the soul by that appetite; whereas the knowledge of God works with grace to increase the soul in the likeness of God.

When defining faith and the power of Christ by the flesh, the Holy Spirit, as “teacher” and “guide”, is drawn into this point of view, and one’s inner gut feelings and intuitions are mistaken for the voice of God. Scriptures errantly used to confirm one’s feelings and intuition.” [end quote]

It’s important to know just how the enemy has played his dirty tricks to put the church to sleep. Jesus made Himself the Oath of our faith, to assist the heart to reason with God by the knowledge He provided for faith to reflect Him. Those who are of the flesh (the aspiration and skills of man) read the scriptures, but follow the path of their own logic. They are not consenting to God, they are resourcing scripture to find themselves and build a kingdom for themselves.

To awaken the church, God has sent apostles to liberate faith from the confines of the flesh, to help believers to rebuild their faith on the one true foundation of Jesus Christ.

The Truth About Toxins
Spiritually speaking the human diet is not good regarding the truth of conflict and the battles of the soul. For the habit of life and the signature of the soul play into Satan’s hands for him to craft a prejudice in your perceptions about God and His care for you. The suffering of this world is engrafted by the habits of life and then once converted into the covenant one would think those things are gone which oppressed you to begin to seek the Lord for deliverance and to know Him.
