The Responsibility of Salvation

Salvation covenant responsibility

We know that God has freely given salvation to mankind through Jesus Christ as we read in the scriptures.

Romans 5:17, “For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.”

Salvation is a gift from God, freely given to all mankind. When we think about the word gift we know that a gift requires no purchasing on the part of the receiver, but is purchased by the giver. Jesus Christ provided salvation in Himself by shedding His blood upon the cross; we all know this fundamental fact from reading the Bible, but what did Jesus purchase to provide the gift of salvation to all men, both Jew and Gentile?

Through Jesus shedding His blood upon the cross He purchased a new and better covenant (Hebrews 8:6-13). God, in providing Jesus Christ as the Saviour of all mankind, provided a covenant through His sacrifice; salvation lies within the covenant of Jesus Christ.

As I mentioned, salvation is free to all men; Jesus purchased the second covenant to save the souls of all men, regardless of race, gender, age and social background. Though salvation is free, it is not free from responsibility as the apostle Paul wrote about in the book of Philippians.

Php 2:12, “Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.”

A covenant is an agreement. With every agreement there are terms & conditions. God brings salvation to the soul on the condition that we adhere to the terms of the second covenant. The starting point of salvation begins with receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit; this is one of the terms of salvation.

Through this baptism we are sealed into covenant with God. To then walk in covenant with God, so that He can bring restoration to our soul, we need to fulfill our responsibility towards salvation by doing the works of the second covenant, which is to function in the New Testament priesthood of Jesus Christ; this first requires instruction by living apostles before one can function, for we need knowledge for faith.

Through our function in the New Testament priesthood we work out our own salvation, meaning that by serving God on His terms we are working with His Spirit, Who then effects regeneration in our soul. God designed the plan of salvation with our participation in mind.

God has given man free will to choose whether to serve Him or not, but in choosing to serve God man is not at liberty to serve Him however he pleases. God has freely given salvation, but with terms and a responsibility on our part.
