Two baptisms, only one saves

Baptism of the Spirit
There are many disputes among Christians today; one of these disputes is concerning which baptism to receive. Which baptism saves the soul? Are we to be baptized with water? Are we to be baptized with the Holy Ghost? Or, are both necessary?

When the people were baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River, they were making a public declaration that they would accept the Messiah, Jesus Christ. They were repenting of their sin, but their repentance was not yet sealed unto life. In making the public declaration that they would accept Christ, they would also have to accept the baptism which He would provide, which is the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 3:11 “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire.”

John the Baptist prepared the way for the coming of the Messiah, making ready the hearts of the people, through His preaching, to embrace their salvation, to accept Christ. Salvation did not come through John the Baptist, but through Jesus Christ. The baptism of water was unto to repentance, but not unto salvation.

Jesus prophesied of sending us the Spirit of God, when He spoke about sending the Comforter. John 16:7 “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; it is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.”

Jesus first had to establish the second covenant through His sacrifice upon the cross and through His resurrection He provided life for those who would believe on Him, and through His ascension back to the Father He would then send the Comforter (the Holy Spirit) to be engrafted into the souls of those who believe.

One of the many lies that Satan has told the church, is that there is no need for the baptism of the Spirit. But, salvation begins with this baptism.
This took place on the day of Pentecost, when 120 of Jesus’ disciples, including 11 of the 12, received the baptism of the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues (Acts 1:4-8 and 2:1-4).

After we have heard the truth of God and believed, we are to then receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 1:13 “In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise”

God grants the forgiveness of sins when one repents and accepts the gospel of salvation, but the purging and healing from sins can only begin to take place once the new repentant has been sealed into covenant with God through the baptism of the Spirit.

Through the engrafting of the Spirit of God in the soul, through Jesus' baptism, our repentance is sealed unto life, we are brought into the covenant that Jesus established, and are thus converted, removed from the kingdom of darkness and sealed into the kingdom of light to receive new life.

Jesus said to Peter that though he believed on Him, he was not yet converted (Luke 22:32); but, on the day of Pentecost, when Peter received the baptism of the Spirit, he was converted, brought into the covenant of Christ; this is the starting point of salvation.
