Who is the Church of God? part 1

Who is the church of God?  Looking back at the history of the church, in a world of warring church denominations, and ‘non-denominations’… doctrines, manifestos, mission statements, organizations & so called ‘organisms’… in amongst the myriad of around 38 000 known versions of Christianity, many a believer today is asking exactly who is the church of God?

The church of God are those whom God calls His own; those people who are called of His grace, chosen by virtue of their response of faith, and deemed faithful in the Lord by their obedience to His standard for acceptance, which is the priesthood of Jesus Christ by which the fruit of His Spirit are formed within. For through these fruits Christ stands for us before the Father and we find our worthiness in Him.

We see Jesus speak of these who make up the true church of God in John 15:8-10: “Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.”

The Need for Knowledge

If Jesus made it clear that fruit bearing is what glorifies God, that we are to continue in His love, and that to do so we are to keep His commandments, we can see that understanding is required regarding how we might be fruitful, what continuing in His love means from God’s perspective, and which commandments are those of Jesus Christ?  This means that the church of God needs knowledge. Not just any knowledge, as to result in yet another denomination; but His holy & ordered knowledge – the doctrine of Christ, as given to His apostles from the start.

The first apostles understood this, as seen in the apostle John’s council to the believers of the early church of God: “Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.” (2 John 1:9)

Note how there is no mention made of abiding in the letter of the Law of Moses, nor of abiding in the text of scripture. By that I mean placing our faith in text rather than placing our faith in God. Did you know that many people can read the text that is in the Bible and completely miss God? The distinction that apostle John makes for us is the word “doctrine.” This tells us that the church of God is identified from God’s perspective, by the knowledge He imparts that He is in expectation of us embracing.

God makes a clear distinction regarding the exclusivity of that which He expects and accepts of the true church of God, being the one doctrine which accurately presents to the believer the Father’s heart; the doctrine of Christ (also called truth / the mystery of Christ / the apostles’ doctrine).

God Takes Ownership of the Church of God When Apostles Take Their Role

Christ directs through Government
Why apostles? To the carnal or natural eye it would seem as if God is singling out one calling and excluding the rest. I want us to learn something very important that God points out to us by using the word “first” in the following scripture:  “And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.”(1 Corinthians 12:28).

The history of the church is not that of man’s tradition which brought division, but God’s tradition which unites by the standard he set in Christ. God takes ownership of the church when the church follows this divine pattern: apostles first. Not by the way of denominationalism, but by the way of Jesus Christ, to reveal truth by which we gain the heart of God.

Jesus set apostles first (1 Corinthians 12:28) over the church of God as foundation layers (1 Corinthians 3:10) so that His knowledge would be kept pure, having nothing of God missing and nothing of man added. Yet not long after the deaths of those first apostles, the church pushed aside the role of the apostle to set pastors in their place (Acts 20:19). Herein we can see the deadly sting of the scorpion, as the Antichrist spirit infiltrated the church; infecting faith with his false knowledge so that the one truth was corrupted into thousands; each reflecting the likeness of man’s individualism rather than the God they claim to serve.

But the day has come in which restoration is brought to the church of God, as the Lord returns to her, His Truth through His living apostles.  Please read on as we continue this topic in part2 of ‘Who is the Church of God?’
